Louisville, Ky - A 9 - 2 thrashing at the hands of the Louisville Thunder was enough for the Toronto Marlies to make a move. The club announced shortly after the game that they had dealt little-used goalie Ty Rimmer and a fourth round pick in 2017 to the Carolina Hurricanes for goalie Leland Irving and forward Jake Dowell.
Irving has started just 2 games and filled in during one other one for the Surrey Eagles.
"Leland is a veteran goalie who just happened to be stuck behind [Dave] Leneveu, who has been awesome in Surrey," said coach Cory Cloutson. "He will be given every opportunity to take the reins here, because we need a solution."
That need for a solution has come from the wildly inconsistent play of starter CJ Motte and usual backup Jeff Malcolm.
"They were great in pre-season. We expected our goaltending to be the least of our worries, but something just hasn't worked. Both guys will stick around in the short term, but inevitably one will need to get some playing time down in the ECHL," said the coach.
The Marlies are three games out of a playoff spot in spite of the fact they have allowed the most goals of any team in the AsHL. They are the seventh best scoring team, so they hope this move will help to solidify the back end.

We figured it was time to give Irving a chance to run with the ball somewhere and it was not going to happen in Carolina/Surrey.
We might regret it next season, but hopefully we can bring in a veteran and possibly a youngster from our prospect list.
