Toronto, ON - The Toronto Marlies knew that they may get one more player from the parent Maple Leafs, but did not expect it to be young center Scott Laughton.
"Scott had a solid pre season, but we are concerned that he will not get enough minutes," said GM Jade Graber. "He will start the season with the Marlies and provide an exceptional one-two punch with Jordan Weal."
While both the Leafs and the Marlies had fairly set lineups through the pre-season, both clubs managed to get a good look at players in various situations.
The Marlies have some great young players who will be handed the torch, while players like Aaron Palushaj have earned their way onto the Leafs roster.
The Marlies' top offensive core will include rookies Ty Rattie, Laughton, Seth Griffiths, Anton Slepyshev, and Ken Agostino. The club also added veteran Adam Burish up front to be a key member that can play up and down the lineup. On the blueline it is mostly returning players, with the hopes that Steven Kampfer and Keith Aulie can continue to provide stability. Out of the gates it would appear that Ty Rimmer has emerged as the starting goalie, which has come as a bit of a surprise to all involved. Rimmer had a solid season last year but the club had C.J. Motte and Jeff Malcolm penciled in as the main two goalies. This may be a case of riding the hot hand, but Rimmer will start the season opener.
With many new faces the team spent much of the preseason trying to figure what worked and what did not, but the unexpected addition of Laughton complicates things in a good way.
"Well, I thought I knew what my lineups would look like, but back to the drawing board," coach Cory Clouston chuckled.
