WILKES BARRE-SCRANTON- The Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins spoiled Philippe Lefebvre’s welcoming party today, taking advantage of a Power Play and late third period momentum to defeat the Sound Tigers this afternoon 3-1. The newest addition to the team didn’t register any points, but did have 1 hit in the game, after 10 minutes and 28 seconds of play on the fourth line.
“That’s a part of my game”, said Lefebvre. “Obviously, I was happy to get some physical play in there, but in a close game like that, you want to factor in on the score sheet.”
Lefebvre, a 23 year old left wing from Trois-Rivieres Quebec, was signed to a two-year contract by the Islanders/Sound Tigers on Sunday night, and it certainly couldn’t have come at a better time. “I was getting tired of playing X-Box all day, so this at least gets me back into the action. It’s a great game, and the organization has been great so far. I’m just hoping they can stay patient with me, and let me get my legs back.”
Head Coach Mike Haviland may be patient with a guy who hasn’t played in a number of months, but for the guys who play every day, the same shouldn’t be expected. “There’s no reason for that, blowing a game like that”, said Haviland. “We peppered (goaltender Justin) Pogge all day, but we took a bad penalty late, and had already given up a late goal. Can’t do that.”
The lone Sound Tigers goal was scored by David Ullstrom, which satisfied Assistant General Manager Sean Croft. “Dave’s a guy who we need every night”, said Croft in a phone call after the game. “It’s good to see him come back from this skid, but we need everyone else to follow his lead”. The Sound Tigers are 21-16-6 this season, and have struggled, losing 6 of their last 7 games.
Croft wasn’t at the game today, as he was called to Long Island to discuss potential trades with General Manager Chris Hessel. With the Islanders 4th in the Eastern Conference and the Sound Tigers dwindling from the playoff picture, you can be sure that these two should be busy over the next few weeks.
