The Baby Pens have a new bench boss. The organization today announced the signing of former NsHL coach Jack Capuano to a 1 year deal.
Following a terrible season under former coach Kjell Samuelsson, his contract was not renewed and he moved on to Syracuse on a 2 year deal. "We appreciate his time in Wilkes-Barre and wish him luck," said the Penguins President and general manager.
Capuano, 45, brings a much more up-tempo system to a team that has always been defense-first. "I see a lot of talent in the organization and I'm excited to work with this team," said Capuano.
He certainly has more to work with than previous Wilkes-Barre teams.
He'll get immediate help in net, as the team signed Carter Hutton in the offseason as they groom him to replace Jose Theodore as the backup in Pittsburgh. He'll split time with long-time starter Justin Pogge. Defensively, the squad will see 3 new faces. Nathan Guenin and Carl Sneep were acquired via trade, and Greg Zanon was signed as a free agent. Top prospect Tomas Kundratek, 24, will again lead the way.
On offense, Andrew Shaw is the biggest addition, and the team will welcome back top-scorers from previous seasons like Boyd Gordon and Kyle Clifford. The team also signed 5 players to entry level deals, giving the team depth that they've lacked in previous seasons.
Capuano will be meeting with all of the players in the coming days as they prepare to open a short training camp.
