Providence, RI - The Toronto Marlies have finally won a playoff round under their current regime. The club has made the playoffs in each of the previous seasons, twice as the number one seed, but have fallen flat in the first round. Not this year. The Marlies took game six 4-2 over the Bruins and won the series by the same margin to advance. They will face the fifth seeded Norfolk Admirals in the next round. Norfolk finished the regular season just 1 point behind the Marlies, and swept the Rochester Americans in four straight.
The series winning goal was scored by winger Christian Hanson, who was moved to the third line after game four in an attempt to generate a more balanced attack. For this game it worked out. "It was a great feed by Zalewski, and as so often happens, Voynov got everything rolling for us," said Hanson of the winning goal, which came 1:30 into the third period after the Marlies had allowed the Bruins to tie the game in the second period after leading 2-0.
The Marlies got goals from Paul Szczechura and Aaron Palushaj to jump out to their 2-0 lead, and then Casey Wellman salted things away with an empty netter. Providence's goals came from Joakim Andersson and Vladimir Sobotka.
The Marlies' best players during the regular season continued to roll in this series as Jason Williams led the way with 9 points in 6 games and his winger Aaron Palushaj led the team with 4 goals. Defenseman Slava Voynov picked up a goal and 5 assists to lead the bluelines. Eddie Lack was outstanding as usual with a solid 2.49 goals against average and .910 save percentage.
"The Bruins put up one heck of a fight, and we commend them on their efforts. Things will not get any easier against Norfolk," summed up coach Jim Schoenfeld.
