Charlottetown, PEI
Prince Edward Island Frostbite is off to a fantastic 6-1-2 record in their first 9 games of the 2013 season. What is so special about starting strong again after their Championship Cup run last season? Rookie AGM Brian Decker is at the helm. “I must say I am extremely impressed with the team so far. A handful of prospects have been given entry level contracts and are pulling their weight for the team,” Says AGM Decker.
PEI Frostbite, however, has struggled on the defensive side of their game by allowing 26 goals against. But, in the last 3 games Frostbite has only given up 4 goals which is different from the way the team first started out. The first few games of PEI’s season saw Coach Groulx and AGM Decker have differences on how the defense should be played. “We could not see eye-to-eye what-so-ever. It appeared to really affect us defensively. We lost our first game of the season 4-3 OT against Kansas City Gears and continued to give up an average of 3.75 GA. Coach Groulx and I sat down and revamped the defense. Since then we are on a 4 game winning streak allowing only 1.75 GA,” Says AGM Decker.
Drayson Bowman, has scored 9 pts in first 4 games of the season; has now been called up to the Coyotes roster. I sat down with Bowman in a one-on-one interview, and asked Bowman what was the reason for his success. “I am absolutely in love with the current form and morale of the team. Everyone is pitching in to win games as best they can. My current success so far has to be all because of the team and the belief that we can score 4 or more goals each game,” he said. With Bowman now on the Coyotes roster, players are picking up where he left off. Current rookie Scott Glennie has been pouring it on with 6 points in 5 games. Also, other notables who are contributing offensively are Krystofer Kolanos (11 pts) and T.J. Galiardi (9 pts).
PEI Frostbites are sitting in second place in Conference 2, and are sitting 2 pts behind their rivals Kansas City Gears. If PEI’s defense gets better, and the offense produces what it is currently producing per game, then this team will make the playoffs with a high ranking. Is it too early to tell if they can still pull off a repeat? Rookie AGM Decker is keeping all of his comments close to his chest in regards to the playoffs. He has been quoted saying, “PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS?!?! You want to talk PLAYOFFS NOW!?!”
