Toronto, ON - A lousy second period made it appear that the Marlies would finally be losing a game in regulation time this preseason. After a scoreless first period the Hamilton Bulldogs blew open a three goal lead as they outscored the Marlies 4-1 on two powerplay goals by Jerome Samson and Matt Marquart, and two regular strength goals by Phil Varone and Brandon Kozun. Toby Peterson had briefly tied the game at one before the floodgates opened.
In spite of the four goals against in the second rookie starter Eddie Lack, who has earned the confidence of coach Jim Schoenfeld, was left in to start the third. "We've seen what Eddie can do when we play well for him, so I wanted to see if he could hold it together in a blowout. He wasn't letting in soft goals, we just weren't competing," said the coach.
It would seem that Schoenfeld wasn't quite so philosophical in his message to his team as they came out of the second intermission with a bang. The Marlies had rattled off six goals in the first 3 minutes and 19 seconds of the third to take a 7-4 lead. Viatcheslav Voynov got a powerplay goal, then Morten Madsen, Petersen, Steven Zalewski, Paul Szczechura, and Cody McLeod all potted even strength markers chasing Hamilton starter Cedrick Desjardins.
The Bulldogs made it interesting with a powerplay goal by Mathieu Carle and an even strength goal by Jusso Puustinen before Casey Wellman of the Marlies put the game away at 14:34 of the third with a powerplay marker.
The Marlies finished the preseason with a 6 win and 2 OTL record, tying them with the Quebec Rock for the top record.
The Marlies were the Eastern Conference champs in the regular season last year, and the league champs in 2009-10, but in both years bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. They are shaping up to be a powerhouse once again. They hope they have learned from their mistakes and can take their game to the next level this season.
