Abbotsford, British Columbia- Abbotsford Heat General Manager Trent Allen was visible pumped Monday morning, as word trickled in about a pair of signings in Winnipeg.
Now, ordinarily, signings made in Winnipeg don't have much impact on the Heat, but that's not the case this year as defensemen Brett Regner and David Savard signed three year entry-level deals with the Jets. Both players are expected to be assigned to the Heat, and were in Winnipeg strictly to get their contracts completed.
"Its good news for us," said Allen. "First, it provides us depth on the backend, as well as competition for jobs. That's key to have. It gives you insurance and keeps you hungry for your job."
"Beyond that though, these are two talented youngsters, and we are a development team, so expect to see them get every chance to move up the charts in terms of ice-time and special teams opportunities if they earn it," added Allen.
Regner is the older of the two blueliners, and graduated from the Western hockey League, where as a 20-year-old he posted 67 points in 70 games for the Vancouver Giants. Savard meanwhile has been a fast-rising prospect on the Jets radar. The 6'1, 217 lbs. defenseman scored 13 goals and 77 points in 64 games for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Allen said the pair hadn't officially been assigned to the Heat as of press time, so he couldn't confirm when the duo would dress for the Heat.
The Heat could use the help. They are 1-5 in the pre-season thus far, allowing 5.5 goals per game to the opposition.
"It's early in the evaluation process, and it's pre-season. The real work and attitude comes in the regular season," said Allen of his clubs record.
