Phil McGroin Sesame Street News
Abbotsford, British Columbia- Just one day after introducing eight new faces for the Heat, General Manager Trent Allen stepped up to the podium again on Tuesday and announced one more signing, as the club inked forward Justin Fonatine to a two-year deal.
"We're really excited about this signing," said Allen. "Justin had a great career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and we feel he can translate that success to the pro level."
The 24-year-old winger scored 62 goals and 164 points in 159 games over four years at Minnesota-Duluth, the same team NHL Hall of Famer Brett Hull skated for in the mid-80's.
"I'm looking forward to this chance," said Fontaine. "I've been overlooked all my life because of my small stature, so for the Heat to give me an opportunity, it means a lot to me."
The diminutive 5'10, 170 lbs. forward is likely to start on the third line, Allen noted, but he could work his way up the line up if the results earn it.
"He's got skill, there's no doubt of that. If it comes through as we hope it will, the club will make room for him," Allen stated.
Allen added that while this is likely the last move prior to the season for the Heat, the club is also trying to assist Jets GM Dave Cherniwchan in signing defensemen David Savard and Brent Regner to deals. Both rookie blueliners are expected to suit up for the Heat this year.
