Toronto, ON - The Rochester Americans traveled to Toronto Wednesday evening looking to extend their season opening winning streak to three games. Vladimir Zharkov and Andrew Ebbett had a goal and assist each and Joe Fallon stopped 22 of 24 shots in a 4-2 Rochester victory.
"Very pleased again with the effort," said Rochester coach John Torchetti. "Our guys really came to play tonight. Toronto is a talented team. If you don't bring your best effort against them you are going to be embarrassed. They were very unfortunate to lose a couple guys to injury in the first period. I don't think either of them came back at all during the game so it shortened their bench. You really hate to see guys get injured on hustle plays like blocking a shot. We were firing pucks tonight though. Johan Harju has a heavy shot and he showed that off tonight. Our third line was huge for tonight also. Zhark and Ebbs were creating a lot of chances and they both cashed in. It is great to see them get rewarded for their hard work. We are playing a simple game and getting good results so far."
Stephen Valiquette had allowed only one goal the first two games of the season, but it was youngster Joe Fallon who got the call in net. Fallon was sharp all night, especially in the third period when the Marlies picked up their play. He made 22 saves, including 11 in the third period, in picking up his first win of the season.
"It was great to help the team win tonight," said Fallon. "We played a very good team game tonight. Toronto can create a lot of chances if you give them time and space. I thought we did a good job limiting that time and space. The guys were great in our zone and really helped me in front of the net. Vally has been great also. He's been a huge help for myself and Muncer. We have learned a lot from him and he got us off to a great start. Hopefully we can keep things going."
Stephen Valiquette will be back in net tomorrow when the Americans visit Halifax. Johan Harju's goal and Philip Larsen's assist were their first professional points.
