Rochester, NY - The Rochester Americans have certainly started the season on the right foot. Following a dramatic season opening victory over the Louisville Thunder, the Americans once again controlled much of the play in a 3-0 blanking of Binghamton. Andrew Ebbett, Maxime Fortunus and Jeff Hamilton all found the net and Stephen Valiquette stopped all 25 shots he faced.
"It was another very good effort," said Rochester coach John Torchetti. "We played a very talented team in Binghamton and I thought we carried a lot of the play. Karri Ramo was outstanding for them in net tonight. They started to push back in the second period before Ebbs got us on the board. Nathan Oystrick played an absolutely fabulous game tonight. He was moving the puck extremely well and I believe he was credited with nine hits tonight. He was a rock for us out there tonight. Vally once again played extremely well in net. He gives our guys a lot of confidence out there. I was very impressed with Johan Harju as well. He didn't get a chance to come to camp with us and it looked like he fit right in. He was shooting from everywhere and played a very solid game for us. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do once he gets settled in. Overall we played very well. We have had a couple of great efforts to start the season. Now we have to find a way to keep it going."
Nathan Oystrick was told prior to the season that he would be expected to be the top defenseman in Rochester. He certainly played like that tonight. Oystrick posted two assists, two shots on goal and nine hits while finishing with a +2 rating.
"It was a very solid game for us," said Oystrick. "It felt a lot like Sunday night where we able to create a lot of chances early and their goalie kept us off the scoreboard. Ramo played extremely well for them tonight. Torch kept telling us to just keep doing what we were doing and eventually good things would happen. It sounds very simple but that is really what we tried to do. I think the key for us is to keep things simple and get the puck up the ice so our forwards can go to work. We have a lot of talent on this team up front and they will do some damage when we play in the offensive zone. I thought everyone did a great job tonight with the transition game. We knew we were going to have to be strong on the puck tonight with the talent Binghamton can throw out there. We have another strong test tomorrow night. If we play with the same effort and intensity we did tonight I think we will be ok."
The Americans travel to Toronto tomorrow night to take on the Marlies. Joe Fallon is expected to get his first start of the season in net for Rochester.
