FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - JULY 19, 2010
The Toronto Maple Leafs have completed two deals today. In the first deal they traded their 4th round pick in this year's draft for veteran winger Tomas Holmstrom. Holmstrom is expected to add a veteran presence to a youthful Leafs roster in the coming season.
In the club's second deal long-time center Matt Stajan was sent to Nashville to re-acquire the second round 2010 pick that the Leafs had sent to Nashville in the Jason Spezza deal. In addition, the Leafs pick up New Jersey's fifth rounder this year, and Nashville's fourth rounder next year.
"For the last couple of years we have been thin at center ice, but with the activation of Matt Duchene and addition of Jason Spezza at the deadline we had to move Stajan. He has served us well and deserves to be in a situation where he will play on one of the top two lines. We wish him well and thank him for his service to our organization," said GM Jade Graber. "We are pleased to get back into the early stages of the second round where we expect to pick somebody from our projected list of first rounders due to the relative unpredicability of this year's first two rounds."
Coach Ron Wilson was very pleased about the acquisition of Holmstrom. "We have very capable wingers, but we asked too much of our younger guys last year. Tomas can play on any line and bring a lot of energy and some good skill. I look forward to seeing what he can do with our club."
Holmstrom was philosophical about the deal. "I enjoyed my season in Atlanta, but hope to help the Leafs make it into the playoffs this year. It's always hard to be moved, but Toronto is a crazy market and it should be a lot of fun."
