Andrew, I agree with your comments totally.
Gavin, the reason why Canadians are so passionate about hockey and it being OUR game, goes more than the game being established in our nation. It's about recognition. It's about respect. It's about integrity. It's about identity. It's about culture.
You are lucky down there as football is you pseudo-National Sport. Whereas baseball (which I love) is your National Past time. If America still had the passion for baseball as it once had, say 15-20 years ago, you could draw a parallel towards how we feel about hockey. The game is bred into us. But that changes in areas of the country. Where I live in B.C., the weather is usually mild during the winter, and it's one of the only places in the world where you could golf in the morning, fish in the afternoon, have dinner and ski at night.
The Canadian attitude towards hockey also extends further than the Miracle on Ice. It's the 72 Summit Series. If you don't know about it, please download the videos. The USA may of had the miracle in 1980, but the Series helped create our nation which was sadly treading water while the world moved around it in 1972. It was really the first sense of being patriotic that Canadians actually had. Something to be proud of on the world stage.
Us towards hockey are like the Kamikazi of Japan. It's honour for the nation, (and yes, there is a "u" in honour. So we may sound cocky and superficial about it, but that's okay. When the big brother to the South can knock us left, right and centre every chance they can, it's nice to have a little pay back. It's all in fun though. Because we here do understand a game is a game in the end. And we may boo you during the game, but afterwards, as proud a people as we are, will tell you "good game, you deserved to win".
As to what Spencer said in his last post, I agree with him as well. But my question to you is, why can't we be cocky about our game? We invented it. We've shared it with the world. Our hockey players have gone across the border to make American teams better while we've lost franchises here. Why can't we brag a little? Canadians aren't known as braggers, but what we are is proud of what we have accomplished. We're not as old as your nation and have not had the opportunity to produce as much as we may have wanted. But the fact is what little we do have, Hockey, the Mountie, Medicare, we are proud of. And if that little bit makes one more person in my great country fly a Canadian flag, then I say go for it.
But I will say this, if the USA or any other country wins gold, we will be the first to congratulate them. And if you want proof, then watch the gold medal game when mostly Canadians will be giving a standing ovation for whoever wins the Men's title and bragging rights.
Hopefully its our boys. Maybe it won't be. But we'll do what we can.
Go Canada Go!
