Toronto, ON - The Marlies' team-record winning streak will have to stand at 15 games. Tonight, the Philadelphia Phantoms beat the Toronto squad 2-1. "We played well, but they played better. Tomorrow we will work on starting a new winning streak," said coach Schoenfeld.
Many players shared Schoenfeld's optimism. "The boys hate to lose, but it was bound to happen," said defenseman Cody Franson. "We'll have to make a new start against Oakland."
"We'll be back in the win column tomorrow. This was just a hiccup. We're playing well overall so it won't be hard to find our groove again," said winger James Neal.
And why wouldn't they be confident. This was just the fourth loss in the last 26 games for the squad. After trading for Steven Zalewski the team lost its bearings and went on a four game losing streak, but coach Schoenfeld stuck by his players and they have put together an outstanding run since. With the more recent additions of James Neal and Steve Downie from the Leafs they have the firepower to continue their strong play.
Alexander Salak injured his right foot while stopping a Brian Sipotz shot at 11:13 of the first. This is the second injury in the past two weeks for Salak. He was expected to split the load with Ben Bishop, but has seem the majority of ice time so far this season. "Alex has been exceptional for us, so we keep playing him. The weird thing is that statistically Bishop has better numbers, but it's hard not to go back to Salak when he has been putting up the wins. We'll give him a bit of a break, and have brought in Popperle to back up Bishop for at least 1 game," said coach Schoenfeld. In other injury news Steven Zalewski, who has missed the last four games is expected back by Tuesday to face the Chicago Wolves.
