Rochester, NY - Finnish sensation Antti Niemi secured his second win in as many nights, stopping 36 of 38 Providence shots leading the Americans to a 3-2 overtime win.
"I just keep things simple," said Niemi. "I see shot, I stop shot. That is really all I can do. I think tonight we got a little fancy in the second period and gave up more chances than we would have liked. Luckily, I am amazing goalie. I don't think I am known in the AsHL just yet, but that will change. Not only due to my amazing ability, but we also have a good team here."
Niemi was named first start for his efforts. Yannick Lehoux registered three points, including an assist on the overtime winner by Jesse Winchester.
"Well I think we all know who won this game for us," said Rochester coach Roger Gorbet. "We were thrilled to be able to sign Antti in the off-season, and he played about as well as you can ask your goalie to play tonight. Yannick was also great for us tonight. He was dangerous every time he was on the ice, and that's what we brought him in for. We got a goal from our fourth line tonight, and they worked hard for it. Providence really came on in the second period after we went up a couple goals, and you have to credit them for that. We are going to have to play a little tougher in front of our net. Josh Green was a force for Providence, and we had no answer for him. He just parked himself right in front of Antti. I'm surprised Antti didn't get a penalty or two tonight to be honest. We'll try and fix some things in practice tomorrow before we play Manitoba. It should be a good one."
As the coach eluded to, the Americans host Manitoba tomorrow evening. Antti Niemi is expected to be back in the net for the Americans.
