-- Portland, OR
The Portland Pirates are playing consistent, two-way hockey down in the AsHL and it seems to be paying off. They may not have a true sniper or that player who is leading the league in scoring, but what they do have is team chemistry and a team that is not concerned about their stats but rather, the product that they put on the ice. Portland has allowed the second least goals against in the league thanks in part to the play of the "Maxime's" (Maxime Ouellet and Maxime Daigneault) between the pipes. Sebastien Charpantier also played very well while in a Pirates uniform, however, he was sent packing in the Irbe deal.
"We are just playing well, I can't really explain it. Maxime Ouellet has played very well since being sent down last month," said GM Cawker. "We have very balanced scoring and that's why I think we are so successful this year. Francois is at the top with 18 points, but then there are six players who have between 18 points and 14 points. Alexander Semin is also playing well, with 14 points in 20 games since being sent down by the big club," he added.
"We have not even hit the halfway point yet so we will just have to wait and see where the rest of this season takes us. Hopefully, we keep up the pace and remain at the top of the Eastern Conference. We are confident that Maxime Ouellet will keep up his stellar play. We are also set to welcome Artem Chubarov to Portland, pending a physical and we are confident that he will be a big addition to the club. He will see time on our first line as well as special teams," he concluded.
