Did you know that the UFA deadline is Sept. 19th? Do I tender my players offers? Do I elect to go to arbitration with them? These questions are answered below along with other scenarios.
(FAQs)-Frequently Asked Questions:
What happens with players age 31 and older with a contract duration of (0) on September 19th?
They become full fledged Unrestricted Free Agents at this time and can be bid on the 'open market' by ANY team. Teams can receive compensatory picks should these players sign on with other clubs. (see constitution)
What happens with players 30 years of age and younger with a contract duration of (O) on this day?
1. If they have been tendered a qualifying offer of 10%, they may now be bid on by other teams vying for the services of said player. (Teams with the original rights are subject to compensation if their player is signed away-see constitution under restricted free agents)
2. If they have NOT been tendered a qualifying offer, they become Unrestricted Free Agents and are free to go to ANY team. (NO COMPENSATION IS AWARDED FOR THESE PLAYERS)
What happens with players 26 years of age and older who have been tendered a qualifying offer?
They are eligible for salary arbitration and subject to fair market value as deemed by the arbitrator. (Tony Pisano)
What is salary arbitration?
It is a court hearing that features team management against the player agent. Team management's goal is to degrade the players performance to get a lesser salary amount. The player agents goal is to talk 'up' his client to get fair market value. The arbitrator decides what the players salary will be and for how long. His decision is FINAL.
