Ok, I wasn't going to post anything on this, but I will. I was at the game last night where Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench. Here's an article from the local press: freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051122/SPORTS05/511220412/1048/SPORTSThere's a picture at the upper left corner that disturbs me a lot. Usually, I'm all for the press printing images without censoring them. But, that image took me aback. Anyways, I guess I wanted to see what everyone thought about what happened. It seriously unnerved the whole Joe Louis Arena. Like 20,000 people were silent waiting to see what was happening as they were reviving Fischer. Anyways, I've seen like a lot of games in the NHL, but nothing like this. I also was a little embarrassed of a few Red Wings fans who booed when the game got canceled. Basically, you had a guy where you didn't know if he was going to make it or not, and some of our trash fans decided to boo. Mooooorons. Word was this morning that he was at the hospital later in the night joking with teammates and being his usual laid-back self. Surprising, but good news. It's like, um, Jiri, your heart stopped beating about two hours ago, but hey, tell me that joke again.

I'm not dissapointed that they cancelled the game, its completely appropriate, but I was suprised. Players have been knocked unconcious before, hauled off on a strecher, not moving and the game goes on. Do you remember when (correct me if I have the wrong player here guys, but I think I'm right) Clint Marlarchuk had his throat slashed open by an errant skate? That game went on....
Its actually a relief that someone somewhere decided to do the right thing in this instant and put Jiri Fischler's life ahead of the game for once.
The news said they did CPR and a de-fib right in the bench area, is that true? How did they do it with all the equipment on???

Dave, this almost qualifies as your first serious post. It only took you 270 posts to do it. Well done. Yeah, I was watching the game while playing in my Golden Tee league <--- sounds nerdy, but I swear its not. Fisher had just gone down, and the whole bar went silent, just as I got a hole-in-one. I was completely oblivious to the whole scene and started cheering loudly. Everyone in the bar was staring at me like I was some sort of A-hole. I looked up at the TV and reailzed that I was cheering on a fatal injury. I felt like a complete sod. well, I'm glad he's doing fine, and it ws definately in the best interest to cancel the game

That was one of the most scary things I've seen in the NHL, and I was at the game, watching the pool of blood gather under the head of Steve Moore, courtesy of Todd Bertuzzi. I also thought it was the correct thing to do by cancelling the game. The NHL now has to figure out what to do with the game, as Nashville was up 1-0 at the time. Do they start the game with the time left, or restart the whole thing a t 0-0.

in Toronto it was reported that Don VanMashoven (sp?) went into the bench to help get rid of his equipment and help with the first aid. appearently he's trained as a cop and was able to help out Jiri.
