Capitals Calm the Storm; Hurricanes Eliminated in 5-Games Washington, DC --The Washington Capitals defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 with a goal off a broken play by rookie Alexander Romanov just over five minutes into overtime on Sunday night in Washington. In doing so, the Caps eliminated the Canes from the playoffs and will now move on to hockey’s Elite Eight (Round 2) to play against an as of yet undecided opponent. “This feels good, it’s a big goal for us tonight,” said Romanov following the game, as his teammates relentlessly pestered him in front of the cameras. “There isn’t a lot of room out there, but we’re just ready to go, its war for us right now.” The Capitals were propelled to victory in the series by an unrelenting powerplay unit that provided the team with 9 powerplay goals throughout the 5-game series and went 45% overall (9 for 20). “They battled hard all series long and didn’t make it easy on us, so it’s a good feeling to get the win and end this series fairly early so we can get some rest before the next round,” said veteran Logan Couture who led all players in scoring with 9-points in the series. “We have been working towards this all season long as a group, and we have a lot of trust in one another in our locker room- I think that helped us against (the Hurricanes).” While it remains to be seen who the Capitals will host to open round two, Caps players and fans can soak up the feeling for now, if only for the moment, knowing that this is the calm before the storm – but after the hurricane.By Richard Thingyi, Senior Hockey insider with DC Leaks Sports Media
