Youth Speed on Display at NsHL Prospects Fastest Skater competition
The results of the Fastest Skater Competition are in, and the future is fast for the NsHL if this event was any indication. Nine of the league’s top prospects took part in the competition including: Denton Mateychuk, Logan Cooley, Nate Danielson, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Noah Ostlund, Matthew Savoie, Eduard Sale, Ryan Leonard and Francesco Pinelli.
Top prospect Logan Cooley blew away the competition with a time of 13.45 seconds, which is a strong enough time that it could very well hold up against the best skaters in the NsHL today. Cooley’s silky smooth skating ability was evident as he cruised around the rink. “I just tried to get up to speed as quickly as possible and stay low around the turns,” Cooley said after his victory lap.
Not far behind Cooley were defensemen Denton Mateychuk and Axel Sandin Pellikka. Meteychuk, known for his ability to lead the rush, finished in 13.72 seconds, while Pellikka, who has seen his value skyrocket since draft day, came in at 13.87 seconds.
The rest of the field featured several players with world-class speed who will hope to establish themselves as household names in the future. Nate Danielson finished 4th place with a time of 14.12 seconds. Noah Ostlund and Matthew Savoie finished with times of 14.27 and 14.35 seconds respectively.
Slapshot Supremacy: Prospects Vie for Hardest Shot Crown
One of the highlights of any hockey skills event is always the hardest shot contest. Ten of the top prospects took part in the event, including: Adam Fantilli, Cutter Gauthier, Simon Nemec, Quinton Byfield, Carter Mazur, David Reinbacher, Maveric Lamoureux, Rutger McGroarty, Leo Carlsson and Pavel Mintyukov.
Power forward Cutter Gauthier clocked the hardest shot of the competition with a blistering 101.2 mph slapshot. The 6’3” forward seemingly towered over much of the field, and his size and strength were on full display. “There’s always room for improvement but I’ve really focussed on developing my shot and release.” Gauthier said.
Slovakian Simon Nemec finished second with a 100.8 mph blast and the highly touted Adam Fantilli took third place with a 100.3 mph boomer. Both players are expected to become stars in the NsHL.
Other notable performances included: Quinton Byfield (100.1 mph), David Reinbacher (100 mph exactly), Maveric Lamoureaux (99.8 mph), Carter Mazur (99.3 mph) and Rutger McGroarty (98.9 mph). Scouts and fans were surely impressed with the offensive power, but they will need some time before they can complete with Zedeno Chara’s 108.8 mph record.
Can’t-Miss Prospects Display Skills in Thrilling Accuracy Contest
The leagues brightest prospects battled head-to-head to see who could hit the most targets in the fastest time. The field included Matvei Michkov, Matthew Knies, Jimmy Snuggerud, Logan Cooley, Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Denton Mateychuk, Nate Danielson, and Leo Carlsson. Their performances once again showed that the future of hockey is in good hands.
To say that all eyes were on Connor Bedard headed into this event would be an understatement, but when the dust settled, it was Matvei Michkov who dazzled the crowd with a quick and accurate release.
“It was actually a little scary how dialed in he was for the competition,” Bedard said afterwards. “He made it look really easy.”
Accuracy Shooting Competition Top 5 Leaderboard:
