Newark, NJ - The New Jersey Devils continued their roster overhaul on draft day, picking up swift skating defenseman Thomas Chabot from the Boston Bruins.
Heading to Boston in the swap were forward Dylan Holloway, deefenseman Drew Helleson, the 14th overall pick in Saturday's NsHL Draft and a 2nd and 3rd round pick.
"Big price for a big talent," explained Devils GM Trent Allen.
Chabot, who Allen described as "having the grace of a gazelle," is expected to slot into the Devils top four and also eat up significant powerplay time.
"When he glides by, his blades sound like how I imagine angels sing," Allen stated, completely overselling Chabot's addition to an eager media. "He makes (Bobby) Orr look like Justin Holl."
Chabot joins Jaccob Slavin, Nikita Zadarov, Ryan Pulock, Filip Hronek, Jani Hakanpaa and Marcus Pettersson on the Devils blueline.
The Devils have revamped their team starting near the trade deadline, and are expected to have new faces such as Joel Eriksson Ek, Barclay Goodrow, Alex Iafallo and Radek Faska up front as well as Chabot, Zadarov and Hakanpaa on the backend, while Filip Gustavsson will replace the retired Thomas Griess as backup to incumbent netminder Ilya Sorokin. The emphasis has been on bringing in a more defensive-minded team that can take care of their own end.
While Allen didn't rule out a large scale trade this off-season, barring such a move the Devils are likely to remain rather quiet the rest of the off-season, and look to have their line up tentatively set as follows for the upcoming season:
Jakub Vrana-Nico Hischier-Jared McCann
Jake DeBrusk-Jack Eichel-Jason Robertson
Barclay Goodrow-Joel Eriksson Ek-Jimmy Vesey
Stefan Noesen-Radek Faksa-Alex Iafallo
Jaccob Slavin-Nikita Zadarov
Thomas Chabot-Marcus Pettersson
Filip Hronek-Ryan Pulock
Jani Hakanpaa
Ilya Sorokin
Filip Gustavsson
Allen stated he would still like to add one more top six winger to bolster the teams attack and add depth on the forward ranks, but is content to start the season as is with the team that is currently assembled as well.
