The trade deadline started for the Senators about a week early with rumors that the organization needed to trim salary. The Senators owner was quoted saying "It is not financially feasible to continue to be a mediocre franchise and carry the high priced players we currently have." Going into the deadline the Senators had a seasonal cap hit of roughly $64 million. "The owner is not wrong, our players have been far too inconsistent this season, we definitely need more from them."
Enter deadline day, the Senators pulled off 5 trades all of which included the veterans that were rumored to be on the move.
The first trade of the day came in the morning with the Boston Bruins, whom the Senators are in a tight battle for playoff positioning with.
To OTT: Marc-Andre Fleury (90), Ryder Rolston (P), Y:2024-RND:4-BOS
To BOS: Frederik Andersen (90)
"Freddie had been a good goalie for us, while being a bit inconsistent at times. With Fleury we get a guy who can stand between the pipes and play at an extremely high level. He is a bit older but a bit cheaper and has less term than Freddy. Ryder Rolston is a hard worker who we see developing into a bottom six NsHLer." Hickerson said about the trade.
The next trade for the Senators is arguably the biggest blockbuster of the day. The Senators sent Stamkos west to the Vancouver Canucks.
To OTT: Roope Hintz (78), Martin Fehervary (75), Adam Lowry (75), Cal Foote (72), Y:2025-RND:1-VAN, Y:2027-RND:1-VAN
To VAN: Steven Stamkos (82), Mark Pysyk (74), Nicolas Roy (75)
"It was definitely hard to part with the 3 guys we sent to the Canucks. All of them had been a big part of our team. While we did give up Stamkos, we got some quality assets in return. Hintz is a top line player and is younger to fit with our core guys like Point, Guentzel and Stephenson. Adam Lowry is a guy who can play in the top 6 or the bottom 6, can play PP and PK, he is a swiss army knife kind of guy. Fehervary is a young upcoming d-man who will play a big role right now. Cal Foote is a prospect who we liked a lot in his draft year and are happy to have the hard nose grinding d-man in our franchise now." Hickerson said about the blockbuster.
When Hickerson was asked about another GM who made waves at his press conference by stating the reason why Stamkos did join their organization, "Our franchise, unlike others, has a strict policy against making any trade negotiations public so I will have no comment here."
Senators trade their long time captain next.
To OTT: Kyle Okposo (78), $2,000,000 (Money), Y:2025-RND:2-COL
To COL: Phil Kessel (78)
"We are grateful for our captain, Kessel, being a class act during his time in Ottawa. He has always been our leader and our best scorer. He will truly be missed. With Okposo we get a similar player with less salary and less term. Kyle will fit in well with our system."
The Ottawa Senators have said that they will honor Kessel by not naming a captain for the rest of this season and they look forward to the game when Kessel returns to Ottawa as a member of the Avalanche.
With seconds to spare the Senators made another big move.
To OTT: Rasmus Kupari (70), Y:2024-RND:2-WSH, Y:2023-RND:6-TOR
To WSH: Logan Couture (78)
"This was a financial based decision to move Couture. His 2 way game is something we loved and we wish him all the best in Washington. Normally we aren't a franchise that stocks the draft picks and prospects cupboard full but this have to change and Kupari is a guy with a great skill set who isn't far from becoming a full time NsHLer.
The last trade was made because the Organization was over their signed roster size of 50.
To OTT: $50,000
To EDM: Gabriel Dumont (66)
All in all the Senators parted ways with:
Steven Stamkos, Phil Kessel, Logan Couture, Freddie Andersen, Nic Roy, Mark Pysyk
And brought in:
Roope Hintz, Kyle Okposo, Adam Lowry, Martin Fehervary, Marc-Andre Fluery, Rasmus Kupari, Cal Foote, Ryder Rolston, (2) 1st Round Draft Picks, (2) 2nd Round Draft Picks, A 4th Round Draft Pick, A 6th Round Draft Pick and $2,050,000 cash
"We did lose a few skilled forwards today but we also brought in a few as well. I think we accomplished our goals that we had set out for today and will remain a solid team as well. I would like to thank all of our players that we traded out today for their time here in Ottawa and wish them nothing but the best of luck with their new teams." Hickerson said at the end of the press conference.
