SPRINGFIELD, Mass -- The American Hockey League Board of Governors convened for its Summer Meeting a week ago in Chicago. AHL President and CEO David Andrews announced the following:
· The Board approved the relocation of the franchise owned by the Carolina Hurricanes from Surrey, B.C. to Raleigh, Carolina.
Carolina had felt a need to move their affiliate closer to save cost and make it easier to bring players up and send them down.
GM Ron Jones, "Honestly, it had simply become unmanageable to have our farm team so far away. Now we will be able to keep an eye on all our players from the NsHL on down."
The new affiliate will play out of the same arena as the Hurricanes and be known as the Carolina Panthers.
The Hurricanes also have re-assigned Willie Desjardins to coach the minor league team.
