Montreal,PQ - AP
The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs in OT on a goal by Backlund on a nice passing play by Sharangovich and Seider. The game was back and forth as Montreal led 2-1 after the first. Toronto tied it in the second and Montreal replied in the same frame to make 3-2. Toronto tied it again in the third on a goal by Forementon. Backlund ended the game at 4:58 to make it 4-3.
This give us a chance to introduce to you the new coach of the Canadiens. Mike Yeo
Marinaro - Coach, Welcome. You got a first win in exhibition in the first game. What are you wanting from your players and what is your strategy.
Yeo - Merci Tony. We want to get off to a good start off the bat. First game. Up tempo. Discipline. Honesty from ourselves and honesty with our team mates. This is a game of a team. Effort. Honesty. Play togther. Work together. I thought we did those things credit to the players. Some hiccups here and there of course. Some rust.. but we are looking at every game in exhibition to create balance and consistency.
Marinaro - Do you see the team as defense or offense first.
Yeo - We want both. We are in the sports entertainment business. Wins are entertaining. But 1-0 win is not. So, we want to win. Idea of the game is to score. But we expect every player to defend.
Marinaro - Seider and Sergachev played around 27 minutes. Do you plan to play them that often.
Yeo - Obviously overtime added to the total. It is a heavy load. These guy are young and thrive on it. But we have to manage that as well. Guhle had and Juulsen had over 19 Zaitzev over 20.
Marinaro - What did you think of Guhle's game.
Yeo - He's like a veteran out there. For a young D he makes the right plays. We are happy to have him.
Marinaro - Any other stand outs ? Concerns ?
Yeo - We had many positives. Faceoffs. PP. PK. A few missed assignments on goals against we need to clean up. But all in all a pretty good game against a pretty good lineup over there. Thanks guys.
There you have it. On to the next exhibition game at home against the Florida Panthers. Casey De Smith to start.
