Calgary, AB-
Back in his bunker at the Calgary Saddledome, GM Drummond released the following appraisal of his draft selections at the Shop in Monaca, PA.
12 Selections
By Position By Country
3 CEN Canada 8
3 LW US 1
2 RW SLO 2
3 DEF SWE 1
1 GOAL
ROUND ONE
1ST Overall Selection (1st in NHL, Chicago)
Connor Bedard CEN
Will his size hold him back? With his talent and hockey IQ, the only question is, how good can Connor be and how fast will he get there? A generational player for the ages, many believe he can be better than McDavid.
13th Overall (15th in NHL, Nashville)
Mathew Wood LW/CEN
Has all the pieces to be an elite winger at the highest level. The only part of his game that needs improvement is his skating. With all the tools at his disposal, we don't see his skating as a problem.
23rd Overall (23rd in NHL, NY Rangers)
Gabriel Perrault RW
Another elite level player that needs to work on his skating. We don't see a problem here either. The way he thinks and plays the game, should be a cog on the 1st line with Connor and Matthew for years to come.
ROUND TWO
41st Overall (33rd in NHL, Anaheim)
Nico Myatovic LW
A hard nosed physical two way winger. An above average skater who is heavy on the forecheck. A Solid 3rd line projection in the NHL.
45th overall (45th in NHL, Buffalo)
Maxim Strbak DEF
Maxim Štrbák is a two-way defenceman with dynamic skating and plays a highly creative game. He tries to make plays with every puck touch. A spin move here, a dangle there, and many slip passes. He’s got high compete, excels at getting the puck out, and is good in transition. -EliteProspects 2023 NHL Draft Guide
59th Overall (62nd in NHL, Carolina)
Felix Unger Sorum RW
Felix is a dominant passer/playmaker who can set his teammates up in many ways. Has above anticipation when opposing forwards are coming down the ice and rarely caught out of position.
60th Overall (75th in NHL, Vancouver)
Hunter Brzustewicz DEF
We were amazed that Hunter was still there at #60. We had him rated much higher. His play vastly improved as the season progressed and was one of the reasons why Kitchener was able to upset Windsor in the first round of the OHL playoffs.
ROUND THREE
67th Overall (74th in NHL, St. Louis)
Quinton Burns DEF
A high defensive hockey IQ, serves him well breaking plays and engaging the puck carrier. Can be physical along the boards when he needs to be. His 2-way game was starting to show itself and should improve in the future.
ROUND FOUR
105th Overall (151st in NHL, Winnipeg)
Thomas Milic GOAL
How does the goalie who backstoped the Canadian U20 junior team to the gold medal, not get drafted higher than 105th?
Many suggest that it his size, standing 6 feet tall and a 179 lbs. He ended the tournament with a 1.76 GAA and a .923 SV%. That put him at 3rd and 4th, respectively, out of all goalies at the tournament. Playing for Seattle of the WHL, Thomas finished the season with a record of 27-3-2, 4 SO and 2.08 GAA and .928 SV%. I don't think his size is going to be a problem going forward.
ROUND FIVE
156th Overall (175th in NHL, Nashville)
Austin Roest CEN
For the first half of the season, Auston was scoring at a pretty good clip and was in the top 10 for quite a while before his scoring tailed off and finished just outside the top 20. 32g 46a in 60 games to finish the season. Austin is among 16 Western Hockey League players invited to attend Hockey Canada’s 2023 Program of Excellence this summer in preparation for the 2024 World Junior Championship.
ROUND SIX
173rd Overall (178th in NHL, NY Rangers)
Dylan Roobroeck LW
At 6 foot 7, Dylan is an imposing figure on the ice. Couple that with good agility and good foot work, Dylan could be a decent NHL forward. Dylan finished the season with 13 goals and 38 assits in 68 games.
ROUND SEVEN
205th Overall (219th in NHL, Colorado)
Maros Jedlicka LW/RW
An overager we think can contribute at the pro level very quickly. Maros has all the raw tools teams typically covet: size, speed, and scoring touch.
