Montreal, PQ - AP
The Montreal Canadiens completed a very strong draft of 2023 propects with a total of 8 picks in draft. 1 First, 2 seconds, 3 Thirds, a fourth and sixth rounders. We asked GM Goetzinger about the picks and the future of the Canadiens.
GM - "We are very happy with this draft class. We had maybe one player slip out of our hands but all in all we are very happy. Here is our assessment of each player."
Ryan Leonard , C - " He is a player we wanted when we knew our pick was 6th. We had other teams looking to move up and offer decent packages but we knew the top 6 are elite prospects in this draft. Ryan possesses pro caliber shot and hands, has a power forward build and desire. He is a gamer and playoff performer. We are excited to have him. "
Carey Terrance, C - "Carey has great speed. He can take the puck outside and is not afraid to go inside with give and go's driving the D back. He scored 30 goals in 67 games with the Otters and had great success with the US Nationals and U18 tournments. We feel he can score with skill and speed."
Yegor Zavragin, G - "Yegor is a 6'2" Goaltender who is quick, athletic and a great glove hand. The last two seasons he had posted a .930 and .920 save percentage. We look forward to his development."
Mathieu Cataford, RW - "There is not a skill he doesn't possess. He wins pucks, he passes quickly, he drives to the net with deception and speed, me makes transition plays. He got 75 points in 65 games and 16 in 21 in the playoffs. We are excited to see him develop more."
Florian Xhakaj, LW - "Florian might surprise you, but Xhekaj is described as a physical, grinding winger which means that trait runs in the family, at least when they are on the ice. Like his brother, he's more than just a guy who plays physical, and there might be some untapped all around potential. He's a solid skater with a powerful stride, His wrist shot has power on it, and he can get the puck on net, but he won't confuse anyone for a sniper. He has good vision, and has the ability to find teammates with passes."
Yegor Sidorov, RW - "Scoring nine goals and 19 points. He was crucial in taking down Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats in the first round, scoring five goals and 10 points in the series, and against the Red Deer Rebels, he scored four goals in two games to help the Blades overcome a 3-0 series deficit. Sidorov is the very definition of a sniper, with a strong, quick shot that he fires as much as possible. This season alone, he shot the puck 246 times, leading the Blades and coming in 17th in the WHL. He’s also smart with his shots, using a deceptive release to beat goalies at any angle, even when they can see his whole follow-through. Only two other players this season scored more game-winners than his eight – Bedard and 2022 second-round pick Jagger Firkus."
Quentin Miller , G - " A second goalie we selected has big frame and positional awareness make him an exciting goalie prospect. He has a small sample size but we feel his celing is untapped as of yet."
Yevgeni Volokhin, G - "Our third goalie Volokhin is a slighly more modest 6'3", but his very athletic. He had a record of 20-6-3. In the playoffs, his strong play continued even if the success of his team did not. We want to work with him to refine his skill set."
" We feel we addressed needs in the organization. Scoring Goaltending and Truculance. The players are no doubt 2 or 3 years away. But we continue to build a group of players that can win in the season and playoffs."
